Filtr Introduces Device-Level Ad Blocking for Apple Apps via Latest iOS and macOS Features
A new privacy tool named Filtr has launched, offering users the ability to block advertisements and tracking codes across almost all iPhone, iPad, and Mac applications, extending protection far beyond traditional web browsers. Developed by Kaylee Serena Calderolla—the creator of the popular Safari ad blocker Wipr—Filtr leverages advanced network-level capabilities to enhance user security and digital privacy.
Network-Level Filtering via Apple's Architecture
Unlike standard ad blockers that only function within specific browser extensions, Filtr utilizes a powerful feature embedded in iOS 26 and macOS 26 known as "URL filters". This framework allows the app to block access to known advertising and tracking domains at the device's network level.
The system operates through a multi-step verification process designed to protect user anonymity:
- Local Pre-Filter List: The app constantly updates a local blocklist directly on the user's Apple device to instantly check and drop ad requests.
- Anonymized Server Queries: If a domain requires further validation, the query is sent to Filtr’s servers through Apple's servers acting as a proxy, ensuring third-party developers never see the user's identity or IP address.
- Privacy-First Design: In alignment with strict data privacy principles, the application does not collect, store, or require access to any personal user data to function.
Real-World Performance and Limitations
In practical deployment, the tool successfully removes ads from various third-party applications, leaving clean, greyed-out placeholder boxes where intrusive elements used to load. However, users should note a few operational caveats:
- First-Party Ads: The tool cannot entirely block advertisements that are served directly from a platform's own domain—such as Facebook, Google, or Reddit apps—as doing so could break the application’s core functionality.
- Implementation Challenges: Developing the app required substantial reverse-engineering due to sparse official documentation from Apple regarding the URL filters framework.
Pricing and Availability
Wipr is available as a universal application in the Apple App Store for a flat fee of $5. The advanced system-wide ad-blocking feature, Filtr, can be unlocked via an in-app purchase costing either an annual subscription of $5 or a one-time lifetime payment of $25.
