Hunting for the Next HealthMatch: TechCrunch Reopens Applications for Startup Battlefield Australia

TechCrunch Brings Startup Battlefield Back to Australia to Uncover the Next Generation of Tech Leaders
TechCrunch has announced the return of its iconic launchpad and competition, Startup Battlefield, to Sydney, Australia, scheduled for August 19, 2026. Organized in partnership with global technology giant Stripe, the event aims to shine a spotlight on the world-class work being done within the Australian and New Zealand startup ecosystems. Ten selected early-stage companies will pitch live in front of top-tier investors, global press, and industry leaders.
High Stakes and Global Opportunities
The competition offers significant incentives for ambitious founders looking to scale their businesses globally. The top three finalists will win up to $10,000 in Stripe fee credits. More importantly, the grand winner will secure a guaranteed, automatic entry into the prestigious Startup Battlefield 200 at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco this October. This prize bypasses the standard application process, offering an unmediated path to the world's most influential startup stage.
A Proven Track Record of Success
The return marks TechCrunch’s first official Battlefield event in Sydney since its inaugural Australian debut in November 2017. The impact of that single-day event underscores the transformative nature of the program:
  • HealthMatch (Winner): Founded by Manuri Gunawardena, then a final-year medical student, this machine learning platform for clinical trials went on to raise over $25 million, expand into the U.S. market, and serve over 1 million patients globally.
  • Regrow Agriculture (Runner-up): Originally pitching as FluroSat—a company using hyperspectral imaging to reduce agricultural waste—the visibility gained led to a seed round from Microsoft’s M12 and a subsequent merger. The company has now raised over $60 million.
Collectively, the winner and runner-up from the 2017 class have raised more than $85 million. Across all 26 Australian Battlefield alumni, the total funding raised exceeds $147 million, resulting in three successful acquisitions and backing from prominent venture capital firms including Y Combinator, Blackbird Ventures, and Khosla Ventures.
