Meta Reportedly Developing AI-Powered Pendant to Boost Wearables Portfolio
Tech giant Meta is working on a new hardware venture: an AI-powered pendant scheduled for testing within the next year. According to an internal company memo, this upcoming device aims to expand the company's footprint in the nascent consumer AI hardware market.
Building on the Limitless Acquisition
The development of the AI pendant leverages technology from Limitless, an AI hardware startup that Meta acquired in late 2025. Limitless was known for designing a wearable necklace device capable of recording and analyzing user conversations to enhance productivity. At the time of the buyout, Meta explicitly stated that the transaction was intended to accelerate its development of AI-enabled wearable tech.
Overcoming Hardware Hurdles and Strategic Goals
The move comes at a challenging time for AI wearables, as earlier devices from various startups have struggled to find a solid consumer base due to utility flaws, privacy backlash, and marketing missteps. However, major tech players, including OpenAI, continue to invest heavily in the sector.
Meta’s internal roadmap outlines a broader hardware push designed to reverse the financial fortunes of its Reality Labs division, which reported a staggering $4 billion loss in the first quarter of 2026 alone. To capture sustainable revenue, Meta plans to:
- Expand its existing lineup of smart AI glasses.
- Introduce "Wearables for Work," a specialized corporate subscription tier designed to bring AI hardware into enterprise environments.
